Penrose Headset FAQ

  1. Aren't Penrose and Mobius pretty much the same?
    1. Actually no. Other than having a common case and similar drivers and microphones, they use completely different chipsets, offer different connection methods and sampling rates, and connect to consoles differently. Both offer Bluetooth and analog connections for convenience, but these are not intended as primary use modes.
  2. How exactly is Penrose different from Mobius?
    1. Penrose is a Lossless, Low-Latency Wireless headset. While it does look like Mobius, it does not feature any of the 3D audio or head-tracking technology included in Mobius.
    2. Penrose is primarily a wireless two-channel (stereo) headset that uses a USB 2.4GHz transmitter, while Mobius is primarily an eight-channel (surround) headset with built-in 3D and head-tracking that uses a wired USB connection.
    3. Penrose was designed with consoles in mind (but also works with PCs), while Mobius was designed mainly for PC use.
    4. If you're looking for a true wireless gaming headset for console or PC, Penrose is the one for you!
  3. Is Penrose Dual-Band Wireless?
    1. No. Penrose features a Dual Wireless connection, meaning you can use it over 2.4GHz wireless and/or Bluetooth. It does not support 5GHz connection.
  4. What's the difference between Penrose and Penrose X?
    1. Penrose is compatible with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 gaming consoles, as well as Windows and Macintosh systems. Penrose X is designed for Xbox, and is compatible with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, as well as Windows systems.
  5. Do Penrose and Penrose X support Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Windows Sonic, Tempest, etc for 3D audio rendering?
    1. Both versions of Penrose appear to the source device as a 2-channel USB headset, so any processing that happens upstream will be transmitted appropriately. As long as the headset is not required to do any processing of its own, any spatial audio system will work.
  6. Does Penrose support audio over its USB-C port?
    1. Penrose supports audio over 2.4gHz wireless, analog or Bluetooth only. The USB port is for charging, programming and firmware updates (you can charge and play at the same time).
  7. Will I be charged at the time of my order?
    1. Yes, your payment must be complete to process your order.
  8. Do you sell to international customers?
    1. Yes, however, international customers will be expected to pay any customs fees/duties in addition to shipping. We recommend purchasing from one of our participating international dealers or distributors.
  9. What is the warranty period on Penrose?
    1. The Penrose warranty period is one year from the original date of purchase, unless mandated by local laws. We consider this as the delivery date for orders placed through our website. For Penrose purchased elsewhere, a dated receipt from an authorized dealer may be required as proof of purchase. Full warranty terms are here.
  10. How does Penrose actually work?
    1. For info about how to use Penrose, we invite you to check out our Penrose Technical Questions help page, where you'll find the complete user guide, setup tips, troubleshooting and more!
  11. Does the Game/Chat Mix control work on Playstation and other sources?
    1. No, the Chat/Game Mix function is only an Xbox feature due to proprietary Microsoft technology that is incorporated on the Xbox. For non-Xbox sources, Penrose utilizes this wheel for mic volume output and USB/Bluetooth mix.

Do Not Buy.

"Shocking headset, bought these just as they came out with a lot of hype surrounding them. From the get go was dissapointed. . . not amazing sound and padding all peeling and now one of the headphone holders in broke. Honestly crap quality."

Premium Price - Questionable Product

"Pros - High Quality Audio - Relatively flat sound overall but excellent quality for a great reference sound. Cons - Poor warranty support - Earpads and headband not covered under warranty despite falling apart after around a year! - Poor wireless range - Can barely move outside of the room without it disconnecting and constantly saying connecting - Poor battery life - Lasts around 4-8 hours before needing to be charged so ends up being wired - Poor build quality - Earpads and Headband material flakes off after a year, The bit above the earcups cracks and breaks just over 2 years later. - Expensive - For £300 you expect better build quality and support, Will not be buying Audeze ever again."

Worst build quality

"After owing them for about a year they snapped in two. And I am very careful with my devices. The sound quality was great and I had no problems with the range, but build quality is worst of all the headphones I have ever owned."

carpe diem

"Man what great sound when it connects and does not crackle when moving (air movement in cups my patootie) I cannot tell you how many time in the middle of playing competitively or co-op did the words "connected" drill into my brain. thank goodness I kept the home theater system loud enough to hear....ugh. My set up is straight on less than seven feet away. I looked for the best sounding headset, have owned A50's etc... and really thought this was the next step in high fidelity gaming, boy did I get taken for a ride. Let me share: the unboxing was nice the ability to hook it up to my mac and update/play around with eq settings and save / download profiles very cool. Really the first hook up to the xbox was a pleasure. Then just a rail ride to "connected" HELL. and the crackle was so bad I reached out to audeze (who did respond quickly) giving me some shite on air/film diaphragm bs, (sound quality awesome, crackle not so much) To end this journey I have a very nice place to park the crackle "connected" monster and treat them very carefully. So I was not surprised when the ear cup holder broke under the pressure of pulling the cup out and up off the ear like I have done with every set headphones I have ever own for over 20 years! I am sadden disappointed and feel down right foolish. Maybe I can get it repaired glued or duct taped it but how sad....."

Great Sound, Bad Build Quality

"So after only 2 years, the plastic fork that holds the earcup has snapped, The wireless range never impressed me and the battery life is rather short. These do sound quite good but are not worth the money."

K D. (2/5)

break

"I really regretted it after I bought it. It is not worth one dollar, and this is the biggest mistake in my life. I bought it for $400 and now it is broken on all sides and I cannot wear it. Also, its battery is weak and does not last for an hour. It is very heavy. Why did you put this miraculous price on a very bad earphone????? By God, if you put it for free, I will not take it"

Will Inevitably Break

"I regretfully feel the need to confirm all these bad reviews. My pair of Audeze Penrose is only one year old and they already have a crack and chunk of plastic missing from the headband. The heartbreaking part is that I treated them like my firstborn child, I never once dropped or even bumped them on anything. They produce amazing sound but clearly have this major design flaw. I'm sorry, but if my pair broke I promise yours will too. Unacceptable for a $300 pair of headphones."

Nathan G. (2/5)

These will break

"I sadly have to confirm that like many have said , THESE WILL BREAK!!! I have used mine for a year with the utmost care never once dropping or banging them up in any type of way. They sit on a headset stand all day well protected from anything. Yet still the plastic housing cracked and broke near the ear cup for absolutely no reason........highly disappointed"

Anthony B. (1/5)

Terrible Build Quality

"Between Penrose and Mobius, I am on my 5th headset... the headstrap has snapped on all but one which had a bad battery and driver. These are only adult used and very well taken care of, they break when I put them on right where the extension of the band goes on the right ear cup. Customer service is friendly, but incredibly slow. Each time I have had to have my headset replicated, it has taken over a month. NOT GOOD. The sound is fantastic and that's about where the good ends... I love my magnepan 3.7i speakers, so I thought these headphone would be exactly what I was looking for but now I'm stuck with this company, and not having headphones for 5-6 months out of the year."

Zach S. (1/5)

Good sounds quality but absolutely horrible build quality

"I got these headphones, exactly 14 months ago. They worked great, great sound quality I absolutely love them. I would have recommended them to anyone three days ago. But yesterday out of nowhere, the plastic fork that holds the left speaker literally broke. Nothing happened. It didn’t fall. I didn’t kick it. All I did was take it off. They never really felt sturdy, but this is ridiculous. Maybe if this was a $50 headphones I would understand but for this price this is unacceptable. I would strongly recommend you to look somewhere else. The sound quality is amazing, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t use it."
