I'm particularly proud of two albums: The first is The Cure's album, "Pornography," and the other is the album I've just done with Budgie and Jacknife Lee, "Los Angeles" I am also proud of my two books and the audiobook versions, which I loved doing!
I've returned to my original way of working, which is to do it without regard to plans or results. Which is how you start creating in the first place. My job is discovery, so I concentrate on that.
I had two brothers, an older sister who exposed me to all types of music, and a father who played the piano. I can't recall a time when I didn't hear music. One of my first memories is standing in the kitchen in our house with my mother, talking to my grandmother about me singing all the songs on the radio. I was 3 or 4 years old. We started The Cure in school. I've been a musician ever since . I think of music as emotional therapy for the world.
1977 was a pivotal year for me. I turned eighteen, and that year, "Low" by David Bowie was released, and The Clash's first album came out. Both changed my life. One because it let me know I could do this too, and one because it was so melancholy and beautiful.
Life is difficult. I look at obstacles as moments of discovery. In my current project with Budgie and Jacknife, we had a motto: "Nothing to be done, and everything will be done." Everytime we came to an obstacle it was also the solution.
I love electronic drums, and I love synthesizers. But I also love most acoustic instruments too. I'm an equal opportunity creator.
Don't do it for money or fame. Do it because you cannot not do it!
My whole career, so forty-five years! I've used headphones mainly to listen to the complete picture in isolation from external sources. Unlike monitors, I also like that you can sink into another world entirely with headphones with no emotional or other distractions.
A few years ago, I did not like the headphones I used while recording my first audiobook. They were harsh and uncomfortable, too! The studio engineer lent me a pair of headphones Quincy Jones left at the studio. They sounded lovely, were very comfortable, and the session was beautiful! It proved to me the value of a great pair of headphones!!
Lately I've been using the MM-500s to help make tracks for use in our live show. There are often over 70 tracks for each one of the album's songs and in order to sub these together in a very compact way for live work requires some very close and precise mixing! This to me is where these headphones come into their own. They help me differentiate between all the very narrow sonic slices I'm hearing and extrapolating that out to make a high volume but very detailed live show. They are superb in giving me the correct sonic map of what we have to work with.
